Top Ten Screw Ups by China in Beijing 2008 Olympic
*Update* August 28,2008: This is a satire, don’t kill yourself over it. Thanks to all the people who pointed out my mistakes! ;-)

10. Allowing an American to be murdered in Beijing who is the father-in-law of one of the player on Team USA Volleyball
Now this is the worst way to get exposure for China during the Olympics. With all the police and PLA guarding Beijing, they let an American get murdered. If this was a Cambodian or a Vietnamese or an Indian dude, no one would have heard about it. Now the image of the Olympic is even more tainted then it already has.

9. They Haven’t Solved the Tibet and other Human Rights Issues. China knows Human Rights is a huge issue and it would be even bigger when the Olympic is in China. They had 7 years to at least “appease” the Tibetan and other minority groups and their protesters, but they didn’t. The results were seen in the Torch Relay around the world. Although no big protest were held during the Olympic, the issue of human rights still lingers in the air. It is also very possible the government media of China “censored” it all away.

8. CGI fireworks China would have been better off if they kept the CGI firework a secret. No one would have known the difference. Now the world thinks all the fireworks at the Olympic were fake. That’s what you get China! You better keep everything a secret.

7. Fake “minority” children
China, is it that hard to get “real” minority children? It’s not like they’re going to pull out a Tibetan flag in the middle of the opening ceremony, or wear a “Free Tibet” shirt under those ethnic clothing. Well…on second thought…with the history of how China has treated the minority, they just might do that. Once again, why couldn’t you keep this a secret? If you can’t keep secrets, use real ethnic children. It’s not that hard!

6 Fake little girl Singer
Why did China have to use another girl to lip-sing during the opening ceremony? When I heard about this. I said “WTF?!?!”. That’s messed up China. It’s not that big of a deal, well it is for the real girl, but it’s still wrong.

5. Sending Underage Girls to Win the Gold in Gymnastics Everyone that I’ve spoken to believe that those girls are underage. I knew China was going to whip out brand spanking new Birth Certificate when the IOC ask for it, China is not going to get punish for this. But everyone in the world knows that those girls were underage. Just like O.J Simpson, everyone knew he killed his wife, but if the gloves don’t fit, you must acquit!

4. Not destroying all the possible cache from all possible search engine that have information of the underage athletes. China did everything possible in order to hide the age of the gymnast except they forgot one little detail about “caches” in search engines. China has the Great “fire”wall of China which is consider one of the most, if not the most, sophisticated firewall in the world that restrict access to certain websites when accessing it in China. I think they are smart enough to get rid of all the evidences, someone just wasn’t careful enough. That guy is probably long gone, he wishes he was in Guantanamo Bay right now.

3. Not winning the Total number of Medal Count So what if China got the most Gold medal. The USA still have the most medal all together. Which makes us #1. Plain and simple.

2 Allowing Micheal Phelps to win 8 Gold and stealing the spotlight from China Did Micheal Phelps steal the show in Beijing or what? China, no one really care that you had the most gold medal. Phelps had 8 gold to himself. You have a totalitarian regime, you could have fed Micheal Phelps some steroid General Tsao’s chicken and make him test positive for doping. But no you didn’t. So Phelps stole the show from you. Way to screw up China.

1. China, your English still SUCKS!
What do these signs mean?

Hilarious is the word. The event is a huge one and there are always chances of a goof up here and there. But the ScrewUps brought out by this article are really not pardonable. There is a whole lot of expertise available, if somebody applied their mind all this could have been avoided. Good article Nhuong.

  2. Chetan Says:

It would have been monopoly if the games were all dominated by China. They wouldn’t have let them go, but it was U.S. which came totally prepared with Phelps, and Jamaican Bolt who had nothing to do but just the world records. Now after all this, who would look about for China and its performance?

China’s english sucked, Yes, as they had mostly done everything on Chinese and international audience had to face the problem.

  3. lvl-1201 Says:

China english sucks? dude wtf the games were IN china, not in the us, stop thinking the world revolts around your country!
God so many things i could say about this top ten, but its not even worth it…

  4. Richard Catto Says:

In China, Olympic Games to be better enjoy. The approving comment is welcome.

Richard Catto’s last blog post..[LOLCAT PIC] Seven weeks, bitch! Seven FUCKING weeks!

  5. Johnson Says:

Some of the mistakes that were made by China during the Olympics were dumb because they really could have been solved very easily. For instance, #8,7, and 6 could have been solved by first issuing a press release BEFORE the opening ceremony telling everyone that some shots will be CGI because it will be too dangerous for Helicopter, then getting REAL children from around the world, and finally having a whole bunch of girls performing including the singer and a bunch of “cute” girls surrounding her. Others you list here aren’t really screw-ups, Phelps winning the the US dominance are just because their athletes won.. pure and simple. Nothing anyone can do about that except train harder for the next four years.

  6. Atniz Says:

This is too bad. Olympic just highlighted every secret of China. But, some even said China’s economy and Internet users is doing better than US.

  7. Natshiz Says:

lol @ the english sucks! i read in another blog about the signs in china for example “PRESS UP TO GO UP” and “PRESS DOWN TO GO DOWN” sounds kinda joke to me. there are many products from china in my country they’re kinda cheap but mostly piracy :(

  8. Andrew Le Says:

Nhuong Son Suck a Di*k. I read this, and thought it was dumb. Why are you picking out little error. I think when you were in Cambodia, you didnt know any english till you moved over to the US, but then you were young, but still. One American was killed, was such a tragedy, but the olympic overall was superb. Using Chrilden to represent minorities are fine and I believed cache are little hard to get rid of, unless you destroy the whole thing. I could finish off but got tired. Also you came over to a Familization camp to help cope with life in the US, so not really a refuge cause you didnt run away. Rite about your time that you left, running was over and people instead apply paperwork to leave the country. Anyways Viet evaded your country sucker. Respect your country, but remember your rootsand if you actually speak any the language(s).

  9. Nhuong Son Says:

    @ andrew
Buddy, it’s suppose to be a satire, calm down, did you miss the part about the general tsao’s chicken?

“Also you came over to a Familization camp to help cope with life in the US, so not really a refuge cause you didnt run away.”

I dont know what a familization camp is. The camp I stayed at, not everyone was coming to the U.S.A. People went to different countries and MANY were denied and had to return home to where ever they came from. And if living on the border of Thai and Cambodia in ONE tent with 5 of my family members is consider as “help[ing] cope with life in the US” well…then i don’t know what else to say.

  10. Andrew Le Says:

With few Writers (yahoo news) bashing china about fake show, performances and lies. I literally take it on offense, seeing where you come from and take success.

Also add to comment. It is true that while many do not go directly to the US and is send to other countries. IT was a place to familized you with different ways of life and I believe the remaining people were send back because countries stop excepting so call refugee (one seeking asylum).

  11. Nhuong Son Says:

If it makes you feel better please consider reading Top Ten Ways to Piss Off the United States

Many people were upset that I bash the US in that article and backed up China. I wrote this article in responds. I hope you like it.

  12. Andrew Le Says:

What bashing on the US? It just show that Americans will be mad at anything if its not to par with there beliefs..

Actually already read it, but I post the first comment. Maybe I read it throughtly when I return from my outer state trip.

  13. Andrew Le Says:

  15. Mr. Johnson Says:

I like how your number one screw up is “China, your English still SUCKS!” and in you in your number 9 screw up you can’t even spell the title correctly, “The Haven’t Solve the Tibet and other Human Rights Issues.”

    You Failed.

  16. Reza Says:

    :(

I do not belive my eyes…. Who would publish this …
Once again. World does not revolve around US. as much as we might think that it does or like it to.

  20. Julie Says:

I don’t hate America. In fact, I received my bachelor’s degree from the United States and I admire America for many of its virtues. However, reading this article made me realize that America has bred such narrow minded poser such as yourself. And that made me sad.

“Allowing an American to be murdered in Beijing..” Hmm..what do you mean by this? You mean China approved this? Are you saying no foreigners ever get murdered in the U.S.A? Did the United States government allowed that to happen then? Seriously..don’t insult the readers’ intelligence.

“They Haven’t Solve the Tibet and other Human Rights Issues” How can you ever “SOLVE” such issues. If you’re so great, why don’t you try solving the social problems in the U.S.A first, Mr Nhuong Son.

“Everyone that I’ve spoken to believe that those girls are underage.” Yea, your little circle of American friends. Have they even been to China? Then again, who could forget how an American carded my dad’s Chinese friend, who at that time was 45 years old, when purchasing beer.

And Son, guess what? Despite all the American worshiping and being a little poser/ wannabe, your English STILL SUCKS! (And sadly, your Vietnamese must suck too)

  21. Julie Says:

    ok..maybe I was too harsh..I don’t know why I get so pissed.

  22. Patrick Says:

To whoever wrote this little list is a piece of trash,
Are you trying to call out China? You’re ignorant and have no class. First, don’t bring up Tibet when you don’t know the details of the situation, do some research.
Second, China is on center stage, there is going to be pressure to look good, so give them a break regarding the little girl.
Also, I don’t know about you, but in my opinon, its QUALITY over QUANTITY, so gold sounds great.
OH , and #1 on the list just blows my mind. I want to see some Americans read or write some Chinese…hahaha

    Screw you for talking trash.

  23. Grinner Says:

Nhuong, you are an idiot! half of what you put on the list are absolutely irrelevant. Fine, the fake/underage stuff were embarrasing, but what about that crap about Phelps stealing the show? How is that a screwup? China won overall. Is silver or bronze more valuable in Cambodia than gold? lastly, How good is the english in your native country Cambodia huh? I hope your professors in Drew University see your blog and refuse to let you graduate because of your stupidity. Your attitude is exactly why the US has reached an all time low in foreign relations.

  24. Nhuong Son Says:

*Update* August 28,2008: This is a satire, don’t kill yourself over it. Thanks to all the people who pointed out my mistakes! ;-)

  25. StanHayes Says:

I thought it was very funny and educational. For instance, I didn’t know there were any Olympians in China besides Michael Phelps.

    StanHayes’s last blog post..What A Bummerman

  26. Dunno Says:

Ummmm yeah about the guy who said that this wasnt about America. Think again, the reason they faked the little girl singing and the fireworks, the birth certificates was to show the world they were better than us. They hand pick people to train their whole lives to beat us, and the fact they make all they people their take english so they can speak it clearly, you would think they could get the signs right.

  27. Rogue Says:

The Olympics are Olmpics. And it was supposed to be sports. All I read up are all whinings and complains No one can sweep that big event so cleanly. So what if Phelps was in the limelight? He deserved it! And China was part of it! They allowed it. They made it happen. So what? It is sports! China is not perfect in its government so is the rest of the world…

AND yeah, their English SUCKS! And so is the Mandarin(Chinese of Americans SUCKS deeper. Where is fairness then? Since the talk up is all on China and the US, if things are reversed, no one among the two is better off actually. PROMISE!

Rogue’s last blog post..Beat that Technology Blog!

  28. Richard Catto Says:

Nhuong Son you must suck a dick and you have failed. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Actually I think you succeeded rather well. :D
Richard Catto’s last blog post..[LOLCAT PIC] Seven weeks, bitch! Seven FUCKING weeks!

  29. The Linkback Project Says:

LOL…. Look at all the little teenage losers sitting in their mothers basement, eating canned spaghetti, getting ready to go to their job as toilet cleaners, badmouthing this weblog?

Why did you come here if your panties were going to get in such a twist? You clicked on a link to get here, then you urinated all down your greasy little, unbathed legs because you yourselves have no sense of humor?

How sad the world has become when someone discussing Asia cannot have a little fun with the topic of their weblog? The same kind of commenters are attracted to blogs where African-American’s poke fun at their own race! Has the internet become so petty and shallow that the lowest of IQ folks seem to have nothing better to do than go around looking for humorous posts to chide because they themselves are so downtrodden from having their mommy screaming at them day and night to move out of her basement, and go get a real life?

The Linkback Project’s last blog post..Today is my birthday…

  30. Andrew Le Says:

Happy Belated birthday shout-out to “The Linkback Project”. Wish you well on on being half of 86 Years Old. You’ve almost lived a century. Please continue posting like been living that long.

  31. chris Says:

After seeing all the people claim how Americans are so arrogant because of the whole English thing I did some research on the internet and apparently there are other countries that speak English as well. Mainly there is this little island somewhere, I think they call it England. Apparently the speak English there. There were a few others that came up Like Canada, Australia (another small island somewhere), New Zealand. But how dare us Americans think they should have to use English over there, since apparently after all we are the only country that speaks it.

  32. Andrew Le Says:

  33. Lee Says:

This article I assume was obviously just to counterbalance the prior one - top 10 ways. Thing being, not to be harsh, it lacked the wit and innovation of the first one so just comes across more bashing style. It was a touch forced.

Nevertheless, it achieved it’s goals. Got good responses, and appears to be well read.

@Julie - exactly. My friends dad [bear in mind I am 34 yrs old and so is she] still gets arded when we got out to dinner. Last time we were on a plane, the airline attendent tried to toss her out of the seat as it was an emergency exit and you had to be over 15 yrs odl to sit there.

    She was 33 years old.

  34. Dawud Says:

I loved it, it was quite funny and satirical…..which you stated it was.

Sadly people who don’t understand that word like to criticize without fully understanding. And some ppl just don’t read things through.

To quote Diddy (And I think that it’s horrible that I’m quoting him) “If people are hatin’ on you then that means your doing something right. Keep doing what you do.”

    Loved it.

  35. Qing Hua Says:

I actually want to see where the girl lipsyncing comes from. I mean the actually facts for it. I haven’t seen the opening ceremony but I have heard a lot about this girl. According to my father, who watched the opening ceremony and chinese news, the girl is now super famous and making a ton of money.

  36. Michael Aulia Says:

Ooh :O I’ve never heard of the lip-sync girl before.

As for keeping secret with the CGI work, I’m pretty sure the information will be leaked somewhere anyway. So I guess they are doing the right thing by letting the world know about it, rather than keeping it a secret and making it more sensational and shameful to them at the end

  38. Firestorm Forum Says:

This post had me lol. I’m not a big sports fan so I was unaware of the behind the scenes stuff going on with the Olympics. Some of this was pretty funny stuff, like fake fireworks and fake ethnic children. Great post.

  39. saraht43 Says:

Interesting article, and even more interesting responses. LOL

  40. Scott Says:

Great post, some of the points you made I really had not heard. As for the little girl, I heard she was replaced since she was not cute enough to present China, although not right.

  41. LucyVet Says:

OK….it was fun reading your post and responses!

  42. cchiovitti Says:

Well, they are good points. I think the same could be said for any Olympics though, or any country for that matter. It’s all about spin and trying to keep up appearances.

  43. Brad Says:

    Whew! Speaking of Firestorms…

    This has been interesting reading.

Relative to the Olympics in general, it’s just too bad that politics has made them what they are. Wouldn’t it be nice to simply have a showcase for the best athletes in the world without all the crap that seems to go along with that?

    Brad’s last blog post..Re-Entry…

  44. Diane Scott Says:

Can anyone tell me if this is true, I swear I read about it in the news or heard it there, but China “displaced” 1.7 million people to build their stadiums for the Olympics. No compensation, from what I heard, just these people were told to “Move, get out now.” If that is true, holy crap! Also I think it was very, very wrong to lipsink when the real kid had the lungs. And, I think it was very, very wrong about the gymnastics. Sure as god gave us eyes, we ALL could tell they were underage from the get go. Who will suffer? Not “China” but those poor girls and their families will take the fall. That sucks.

  45. Michelle Says:

    You made me laugh!!

  46. FabulousAbstinence Says:

Still think it’s a great post. Well said and well done.

  47. Shreela Says:

I can’t wait until the real singing girl becomes an international star with her voice 8^)

  48. Lee Says:

    @ CCHI

Exactly, China seems to attract much press for it’s negative issues, which are valid…but other countries can scrape through.

One “western” country which hosted the Olympics in the last 20 years, actually dramatically cut financing for education and the universal health for a number of years to finance the Olympics, had actual hospital beds shut down, “built” new schools by using trailors, and all sorts of things. That nation appeared to get no heat, and the dramatic drop in health funding literally meant people died as the wait shot to 4 years for many treatments.

Always as though ppl prefer to toss stones far away, instead of looking at things closer to home where maybe we can make a difference.

  49. Janet Giacoma Says:

Isn’t “saving face” meant to be more than just “putting on a good show?” Great post!

  50. Lisa Says:

    I agree with your list100%!

  51. Jay Says:

I love this article. Screw China!!

  52. Zhu Says:

I love China though, so this list didn’t scare me, I still went to the Olympics! ;-)

I actually found very little “Chinglish” signs this year… my last trip in China was in 2004 and there were everywhere at that time!
